17 – Alpha- Hydroxy Progesterone
The 17-Alpha-Hydroxy Progesterone (17-OHP) test is a blood test that measures the levels of a hormone called 17-OHP in the blood. This test is commonly used to screen for Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia (CAH), a genetic disorder that affects the adrenal glands. In CAH, the adrenal glands are unable to produce enough cortisol, a hormone that helps the body respond to stress. This causes an increase in the production of 17-OHP, which can lead to abnormal development of the genitals in females and early puberty in both males and females. The 17-OHP test is a simple and non-invasive way to screen for CAH, and it can be done at any age. It is usually done on newborns, but it can also be done on older children and adults who show symptoms of CAH.
