The Absolute Eosinophil Count (AEC) is a specific component of a complete blood count (CBC) with differential. It measures the exact number of eosinophils present in a cubic millimeter of your blood.


This count is considered more clinically useful than just the percentage of eosinophils, as it provides a true measure of the total population of these cells.

Eosinophils are a type of white blood cell (leukocyte) that plays a key role in the immune system. Their main functions are:


  1. Fighting Parasites: They are mobilized to destroy parasitic infections (such as hookworm or tapeworm).
  2. Modulating Allergic Reactions: They are involved in the inflammatory response associated with allergies and asthma. They contain granules filled with enzymes and toxic proteins that are released to deal with threats.
