The ASO Titer test measures the presence and concentration of Anti-Streptolysin O antibodies in the blood. These antibodies are produced by the immune system in response to an infection by Group A Streptococcus bacteria, specifically those that produce the enzyme Streptolysin O.
The ASO test is primarily ordered when a patient presents with symptoms of two serious conditions that can develop weeks after an untreated or inadequately treated Group A Streptococcus infection (like strep throat or scarlet fever)
1. Rheumatic Fever (RF)
2. Post-Streptococcal Glomerulonephritis
