Bilirubin is a yellowish pigment produced when your body breaks down old red blood cells. Think of it as "cellular waste." Normally, your liver processes this waste and flushes it out of your body in your stool (which gives stool its brown color).
The Bilirubin Blood Test measures the amount of this pigment in your blood. It is the gold standard for diagnosing Jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes) and determining if the problem lies in your blood, your liver, or your gallbladder.
