CREATINE KINASE MB (CK-MB)

CK-MB is a specific form (or isoenzyme) of the enzyme Creatine Kinase (CK). Creatine Kinase (CK) is an enzyme found in various muscle tissues, including the heart, skeletal muscles (arms, legs), and the brain. CK-MB is the specific subtype that is most concentrated in the heart muscle (myocardium). While small amounts are found in skeletal muscle, a significant rise in CK-MB circulating in the blood strongly suggests myocardial injury.

The primary reason for ordering a CK-MB test is to determine if a person experiencing symptoms (such as chest pain, shortness of breath, or upper body discomfort) has had a Myocardial Infarction (Heart Attack) or other acute injury to the heart. Key Characteristics in Diagnosis: Release Pattern: When heart muscle cells are damaged (e.g., due to a blockage in a coronary artery), they release their internal contents, including CK-MB, into the bloodstream. Timing: CK-MB levels usually begin to rise 3 to 6 hours after the onset of chest pain or heart injury. They typically peak around 12 to 24 hours. They return to normal within 2 to 3 days (48 to 72 hours).
