CREATININE CLEARANCE TEST

The Creatinine Clearance test is a diagnostic procedure used to estimate the Glomerular Filtration Rate (GFR), which is a key measure of how efficiently the kidneys are filtering waste products from the blood. It quantifies the rate at which the kidneys remove creatinine from the blood and excrete it into the urine.

• Principle: The test relies on the fact that creatinine (a muscle waste product) is produced at a relatively constant rate and is filtered freely by the glomeruli (the kidneys' filtering units). It is then largely excreted in the urine without significant reabsorption.
• Purpose: By comparing the amount of creatinine in a timed urine collection (usually 24 hours) with the amount of creatinine in a blood sample, the test estimates the volume of blood the kidneys can clear of creatinine per minute (mL/min).

This value is a strong proxy for the GFR.
