The Herpes Simplex Virus Type I (HSV-I) IgG Antibody Test is a serological blood test used to detect the IgG class of antibodies specific to the HSV-I virus. HSV-I is primarily associated with oral herpes (cold sores or fever blisters around the mouth), though it can also cause genital lesions.
IgG antibodies are "memory" antibodies. They are produced several weeks after the initial infection and persist in the blood for life. A positive IgG test confirms that the person has been exposed to and infected with HSV-I at some point in their life.
