Phosphorus Role and Regulation

• Function: Phosphorus is a component of ATP (adenosine triphosphate, the body's main energy source), DNA, RNA, and cell membranes. Approximately 85% of the body's phosphorus is found in the bones and teeth.
• Regulation: Serum phosphate levels are primarily regulated by the kidneys (which filter excess phosphate), the parathyroid hormone (PTH), and Vitamin D. PTH lowers phosphate levels by increasing its excretion in the urine, while Vitamin D increases the absorption of phosphate from the intestines.
