The Serum Iron (Fe) test measures the amount of iron that is currently circulating in the blood. This iron is bound to a transport protein called transferrin as it moves from storage sites (like the liver and bone marrow) to cells that need it, primarily those in the bone marrow making red blood cells.
This test is rarely interpreted alone and is a key component of the full Iron Studies panel, which gives a complete picture of the body's iron status.
