The Serum Transferrin Test measures the amount of transferrin protein in your blood. Transferrin is the main protein responsible for transporting iron from the intestines (where it's absorbed) and from storage sites (like the liver) to all the cells that need it, most importantly the bone marrow for making red blood cells.
Because transferrin's primary job is to carry iron, its levels are crucial for assessing the body's overall iron status. This test is a key component of the full Iron Studies panel, along with Serum Iron, Ferritin, and Transferrin Saturation.
