The Serum Uric Acid test measures the amount of uric acid circulating in your blood. Uric acid is a normal, natural waste product formed when the body breaks down purines, substances found in high concentrations in many foods (like red meat, seafood, and alcohol) and in your body's cells.
Normally, uric acid dissolves in the blood, travels to the kidneys, and is excreted in urine. However, if the body either produces too much uric acid or the kidneys don't excrete enough, levels can build up. High levels can lead to the formation of sharp, needle-like crystals in the joints, a painful condition called gout.
This test is primarily used to diagnose or monitor conditions related to abnormal uric acid metabolism, especially gout and kidney issues.
