Overview

Uric Acid Serum

Uric Acid Serum

The Serum Uric Acid test measures the amount of uric acid circulating in your blood. Uric acid is a normal, natural waste product formed when the body breaks down purines, substances found in high concentrations in many foods (like red meat, seafood, and alcohol) and in your body's cells.

Normally, uric acid dissolves in the blood, travels to the kidneys, and is excreted in urine. However, if the body either produces too much uric acid or the kidneys don't excrete enough, levels can build up. High levels can lead to the formation of sharp, needle-like crystals in the joints, a painful condition called gout.

This test is primarily used to diagnose or monitor conditions related to abnormal uric acid metabolism, especially gout and kidney issues.

Frequently asked questions on " Uric Acid Serum "

A high uric acid level is called Hyperuricemia. While not everyone with high levels develops symptoms, it increases the risk for: Gout: The most common consequence, causing sudden, severe attacks of joint pain and swelling (often in the big toe). Kidney Stones: Uric acid can crystalize in the kidneys, leading to painful stones. Kidney Disease: Persistently high levels can contribute to long-term kidney damage.

The cause is usually a combination of diet and genetics: Diet High in Purines: Eating large amounts of red meat, shellfish, and organ meats. Alcohol: Especially beer, which is high in purines, and hard liquor. Obesity and Metabolic Syndrome: Excess weight is strongly linked to reduced uric acid excretion. Kidney Dysfunction: Impaired kidney function prevents effective uric acid removal. Certain Medications: Such as diuretics (water pills) and low-dose aspirin.

Overnight fasting is Preferred.
