The Urine Culture test is the gold standard diagnostic procedure used to identify and quantify the type of microorganisms (usually bacteria) present in a urine sample. It is primarily ordered to confirm and diagnose a Urinary Tract Infection (UTI).

A urine culture provides two vital pieces of information:

  1. Confirmation of Infection: It confirms that the symptoms are caused by a bacterial infection, ruling out non-infectious causes.
  2. Organism Identification: It identifies the specific species of bacteria causing the UTI (e.g., Escherichia coli (E. coli), Klebsiella, or Proteus).
  3. Antibiotic Sensitivity (C & S): When bacteria are found, a Sensitivity Test (or Antibiotic Susceptibility Test) is performed. This determines which antibiotics will be most effective at killing the specific bacteria found.
