The Glucose-6-Phosphate Dehydrogenase (G6PD) Test is an enzyme assay used to screen for $\text{G}6\text{PD}$ deficiency, the most common human enzyme deficiency worldwide. G6PD is a critical enzyme found in all cells, but is particularly important in red blood cells (RBCs).
The G6PD enzyme protects RBCs from damage caused by harmful oxidative stress. Without adequate G6PD, certain triggers (such as specific medications, foods like fava beans, or severe infection) can cause the RBCs to break down rapidly, leading to a type of anemia called hemolytic anemia.
