The PSA Free (Free Prostatic Specific Antigen) Level Test is a specialized blood test performed to measure the amount of PSA circulating in the blood that is not bound to other proteins.
PSA is a protein produced primarily by the cells of the prostate gland. It exists in two major forms in the blood: Total PSA (both free and bound) and Free PSA (unbound).
The PSA Free Test is typically ordered only when the Total PSA result falls into a diagnostic "gray zone" (e.g., between 4.0 to 10.0 ng/mL). It is used to calculate the Free-to-Total PSA Ratio, which helps physicians determine the likelihood that an elevated Total PSA level is due to benign conditions like BPH (Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia) rather than Prostate Cancer.
