The Anti-Mitochondrial Antibody (AMA) test is a blood test that detects the presence of antibodies against mitochondria, which are small structures in cells that produce energy. The AMA test is primarily used to diagnose primary biliary cholangitis (PBC), a chronic autoimmune liver disease in which the immune system attacks and damages the bile ducts in the liver. PBC can cause a range of symptoms, including fatigue, itching, and jaundice, and can lead to cirrhosis and liver failure if left untreated. The AMA test is a useful tool for diagnosing PBC, as up to 95% of people with the disease have detectable levels of AMA in their blood. The test involves taking a small sample of blood, which is then analyzed in a laboratory to determine the levels of AMA. A positive test result indicates that the person has antibodies against mitochondria and may have PBC or another autoimmune disorder. Depending on the results of the test and the person’s symptoms, doctors may recommend additional diagnostic tests or treatments to address underlying conditions.
