The fructosamine test is a blood test that measures the level of glycated serum proteins, specifically albumin, in the blood. Glycated serum proteins are formed when glucose in the blood combines with serum proteins, such as albumin. The fructosamine test is commonly used to monitor blood glucose control over a period of two to three weeks. Unlike the hemoglobin A1C test, which measures blood glucose control over a period of three to four months, the fructosamine test provides a more immediate picture of blood glucose control. The fructosamine test is particularly useful for patients with diabetes who have recently changed their diabetes medication or have undergone a change in their diet or exercise regimen. The test is done by drawing a blood sample from a vein and is a simple and relatively non-invasive procedure. Abnormal levels of glycated serum proteins can indicate poor blood glucose control and may require adjustments to diabetes treatment.
